My name is Heather Fletcher and I hope to represent all of Frederick County's students, parents, and educators. I will ensure that Frederick County Public Schools provide a great education for all students, free of ideologies that may infringe upon individual family values. I, myself am a mother of three elementary aged children – 10, 8, and 5. My husband and I settled in Point of Rocks, MD in 2009 and we love everything this community has to offer families.
I’ve been exposed to a lot of different education perspectives. My mother and mother-in-law are both career public-school educators in the DMV area. I’ve also witnessed successful homeschooling environments in my extended family members in Minnesota and nearby in Maryland. My own children have attended public school in Frederick County previously – I am now homeschooling them. Partly as a response to Covid-related school closures and virtual schooling, but also in response to the administration of school systems in Frederick County and across Maryland. The more I learned about decisions made and the priorities of current administrators, the more I became concerned.
I believe in the critical role public schools play in our Society. The decisions we make for our educational system literally determine our shared future. Today’s children will be tomorrow’s leaders. It is our duty to ensure we provide a top-tier academic education for our children – and resist forcing one-sided viewpoints around controversial social issues on children. We must respect individual families’ desires to raise their own children in their own value systems. This type of diversity and freedom is what makes America the greatest country in the world. This will be my “north star” – ensuring that our educational system stays “in lane” – focusing on the academic education of our children.
